Bon Iver

Last week, we made a significant drive to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to see Bon Iver for the second of its two sold-out homecoming performances at Zorn Arena. This particular show also marked the end of its 2011 U.S. + European tours. When we arrived to town, we learned that the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the city proclaimed December 13 “Bon Iver Day.” I guess when you bring national attention to your hometown and you are nominated for four Grammy awards, you damn well deserve it. It is doubtful, however, that he will win given his disinterest in the ceremony — but, if he did . . . I would be thrilled. I’m sure our friend, Adam Voith, would be happy, too.

Upon entering Zorn, a gigantic banner hung from above. It read: “Welcome home, Grammy-nominated Bon Iver!” How often do you see that at a rock show? Zorn’s size was not impressive — maybe capacity of 3600? You could really feel the excitement from hometown fans who most likely have known (or have been fans of) Justin Vernon since the beginning of his time as a performing musician. A very magical show for many.

P.S. “Holocene” is a music video worth watching:
